Sylvania MP3 Player SMPK2077

Video playback troubleshooting
Posted by adahlenburg on Nov 30th, 2008 at 8:53pm

The package and manual on this Sylvania 2GB MP3 plus video player states that it playes video. In the manual on features it states AMV format play, then a few lines later it states MP1 MP2 MP3 WMA WMV ASF and WAN music files. I put 2 wmv files on that play fine as videos in windows media player, are valid, not corrupt or anything. When I select the movies option the files do not appear. They do however appear under music and play as sound files only and not as video files. Just what format doe video files need to be in for this thing to recognize and play them. I have owned regular mp3 players before, an IPOD, and I am pretty literate when it comes to synching and maneuvering around. It seems like this was a detail buried in the fine print.

Using the AMV file conversion software that came with the product CD, I was able to convert MPG and AVI and WMV files of videos into AMV format. Once in AMV format the player could read and play them. Windows media player could also play them. I researched sylvania a little more and it seems this inabilty to codec - decode for common video formats is a problem across the board. They do provide conversion tools, and being a 10 year IT pro I was able to get through it, but this is for my 8 year old, so it looks like I will have to run this decoder on all the mpeg and music video files before they can be used on the player. What a pain. Yup, should have spent another 80 and got an IPOD, which she could do herself..but already broke one...they are not so sturdy...at least the sylvania protection plan for 15 months was only 6 bucks. Live and learn.

I also wanted to mention that AMV video files are considerably smaller than AVI and mpeg or mpg files once converted. I realized a 20-60% space - size reduction per file, and on a 2GB limit the savings really add up.
