Morphy Richards Coffeemaker

Under pressure and with coffee in place, the machine seems only to pass half the required water through the coffee - some water remains in the machine. We refill in order to pass more water through. We have washed out the machine and passed water through without coffee in place and it seems to work fine.
Any ideas? Thanks in anticipation.
