Message indicates "Searching"

While on Vacation the handset became discharged. The batteries are now fully charged but the handset displays "Searching". I'm not sure of the model number as I do not see it written anywhere on the base or handset. The serial number is AK502369490.
I've tried unplugging the base and removing the batteies from the handset to re-initialize everything but without success. Any suggestions?
