Sustain Pedal Problems

When I initially turn on keyboard with sustain pedal plugged in, it doesn't work at all. When I unplug sustain pedal and plug it back in, everything gets sustained and the sustain function will not turn off, even when I haven't pressed down on the pedal at all. Do I need a new pedal or is there some setting that was accidentally set on the keyboard?
