changing the number of rings

how do you change the number of rings before the answering machine picks up?

    That's what I'm trying to find out. When I got it picked up on 4 rings, then changed on its own to 3, then to 2 and so on. Now it picks up on 1 ring and I don't have time to answer the phone! Help!

    I have a copy of the instructions (1 page) it does not indicate that there is a way to change the number of rings. I'm going to buy a new machine.
