Product Problem: Smoke Detector Gone Wild?!

My smoke alarm started chirping loudly - once per minute which seems to signify a need for a new battery which I replaced. The detector continues to chirp once per minute anyway. In fact, the detector chirps even without a 9V in it which seems bizarre...?

We've had the same problem over the last 4 years. I don't know how to fix it. We've tried replacing the battery with different brands. We've tried leaving the battery and power disconnected for weeks at a time. Nothing seems to reliably stop these things from chirping. I HATE these stupid BRK 4120SB 's.
